Understanding the importance of Forbidden Planet: without Commander John Adams, we might never have had Captain Kirk, Captain Picard, Commander Sinclair, Commander Adama, or Han Solo. Forbidden Planet paved the way, proving the audience interest in well-produced intelligent science fiction, and also inspiring generations of SF film makers.

No, it’s not the Harlan Ellison script. No, it’s not directly based on any story by Isaac Asimov. No, Susan Calvin’s not supposed to look like Bridget Moynahan. Yes, it has more chase scenes and gun shots than Asimov wrote in 515 books. Yet I, Robot is one of my favorite SF films, with a nice mix of humor and intelligence and action and (mostly) believable science. And besides, it’s Will Smith! I like it, and I’m proud of it!
