We made a promise to be 100% compatible with every Windows Media Center Extender on tubeCore, the Internet DVR for PlayOn and Tversity. It was hard work because Windows 7 changed some things under the covers and broke that compatiblity. I thought we might be forced to renege on that promise. But I got emails, comments, and forum posts asking us to try a little harder. We did and the goal has been reached.

We are quite pleased with the outcome. There are thousands of tubeCore users out there enjoying Hulu, Netflix, CBS, ESPN and more through the Internet.

I get emails every week thanking me for creating tubeCore (pretty cool; never expected that). This is not to brag, but it’s great to know that all the hard work paid off.

So I guess what I’m trying to say is, thank you for using tubeCore.

I get emails almost every day asking for one feature or another, or to let me know what we need to work on. I keep track of those requests and am happy to release a couple of those features you’ve been asking for.

Features of This Release

Ability to choose a default Media Server. This will cause tubeCore to automatically go to a Media Server, such as PlayOn, when tubeCore is first run.

Ability to choose to play only WMV video in PlayOn. This option will cause tubeCore to always play WMV video on PlayOn.

Removed the annoying preview video window from Gallery pages.

Requirements

Windows 7 with Media Center, Windows Vista Home Premium, or Vista Ultimate

The latest operating system updates from Microsoft

A DLNA Server such as PlayOn, Tversity, or Twonky Media

Known Issues

Sometimes when viewing a video that is streaming from the Internet the video playback engine can get ahead of the streaming engine. This can cause the “Video Bluescreen” with a message indicating that the video is in the wrong format. Use the “Skip Back” feature of your remote (or game controller) to skip backwards a few seconds, or rewind. It should play fine after that.

Here’s a direct link to the latest version.

If you have gotten an “ERROR – PLEASE RETRY, Unspecified Error” message this latest release should address the issue.

A deployment error lead to some serious problems in the last release of tubeCore. The short story is that our servers got hacked a few weeks ago (or, so we thought) and, in response, we locked down everything we could. Doing this broke the deployment process which allowed a buggy piece of software to be included in the tubeCore release.

This has (hopefully) been all fixed.

Thanks for all of the immediate feedback, even if some of it was a little harsh It did help us track down the problem and fix it.

We are very excited to announce the latest version of tubeCore with full Windows 7 Support for Extenders!

Here is the download link to tubeCore. Check your email (if you’re on the list) for a direct link (no need to fill out the email form).

Over the last few months we have been unable meet our 100% Windows Media Center Extender support committment.

That was a drag.

We are now pleased to announce Full Windows Media Center Extender Support on Windows 7 in version 1.0 of tubeCore.

Features of This Release

Full Windows Media Center Support under Windows 7!

Stable! A slew of bug fixes to make things run even more smoothly.

Requirements

Windows Vista Ultimate or Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional

The latest operating system updates from Microsoft

A DLNA Server such as PlayOn, Tversity, or Twonky Media

Known Issues

Very short videos or very small videos will not play. The playback buffer must fill up before playback starts and very short videos will not fill up the playback buffer. We know that this is an issue and will fix it in a later release.

YouTube video within PlayOn may have some playback problems. These same problems are found on the iPhone’s YouTube playback, so it is doubtful that this is a PlayOn or tubeCore issue.

Send email with any errors you encounter. And send any feature requests as well.

Thank you for your business, help and support!

As much as we love the idea (tubeCore is made to help you do this) it is kind of a strange move for a company that really really doesn’t want you to leave your cable connection behind.
3. HDTV Indoor Antenna

Give the Media Center Man the gift of Freedom; Freedom from the cable companies! An HDTV indoor antenna like the Terk HDTVa Indoor Amplified antenna works great. I have one! Plug this into an HDTV Tuner and you can start watching and recording over-the-air HDTV right now. Caution, while an indoor antenna can work fine, it wasn’t long before I was dissatisfied with mine and ran an outdoor antenna up on the house. So start here, but be prepared to go all the way with an outdoor antenna.

4. PlayOn, or Tversity, or Other Media Server

By combining PlayOn and tubeCore you get hulu.com, Netflix, Amazon VOD, and a tons of other Internet TV content delivered right to Windows Media Center. And since you’re going out to buy an Xbox 360 it’s a cinch to get it right on your TV. Sure, you can run PlayOn or Tversity directly through the Xbox 360, but it’s just not the same experience. A single Internet glitch can kill the connection and ruin your TV watching experience. PlayOn with WMC (and tubeCore) is the right combination.

5. HDTV Tuner

Few PCs support HDTV channels out of the box. An HDTV tuner will bring live TV shows, sports, and the like into Media Center. With a new tuner Media Center really starts to shine by turning Media Center into a Tivo-like TV recording powerhouse! Pausing live TV is just the beginning. Media Center goes out and finds sports, your favorite TV shows and even movies. It can’t be beat. The Media Center Man will love to get an HDTV tuner as a gift!

6. Huge 1 TB External Drive

After faithfully recording an entire season of Heroes, American Idol, or NCIS in HD that PC hard drive will be pretty full. And who wants to delete the entire show after all that? No need, just move the show off of your PC and onto a 1 terabyte external drive. The external drive can be stored away, along with all those recorded shows, and brought out whenever the Media Center Man wants to enjoy his favorite Carrie Underwood performance!

7. Media Center Extender

There’s nothing quite like controlling a computer with a remote control on your TV screen. While there are ways to connect a PC directly to your TV it’s just not that sexy. That problem has been solved in a most attractive way. Enter Xbox 360. Besides being the gaming system of choice it lets you put Media Center on your TV screen.

8. Digital Cable Tuner

Over-the-air HDTV is fine and all, but ESPN, HBO, TBS, and the USA Network are nice too! So if you can’t save the Media Center Man from the cable companies at least save him from the crappy cable company set top box! No tired old set top box comes close to a Windows Media Center with a couple of CableCard TV tuners.

9. 7.1 THX Surround Speakers

Nothing says, “I love you these speakers” like a Media Center Man with a set of sweet sounding THX 7.1 speakers. Take my word for it. The Superbowl is just more super with 7 speakers and a subwoofer. The right speakers just makes everything mo’ better. The Media Center Man will never forget the gesture.

10. 7.1 Surround Sound Receiver

The truest theater experience can only be had with a great audio setup. Until recently high quality 7.1 surround sound receiver cost over $1,000! But Onkyo fixed that problem with an affordable and high-quality receiver called the TX-SR505. The 505 was a raging success. A combination of the latest features and less than half the usual cost made the 505 a major success. Onkyo followed it up with the TX-SR607. The 607 is even better. The Media Center Man will love it!
