There is some confusion about a recent email announcement. A new update to tubeCore was released which, according to the email, “Discontinued use of Hulu as a source for TV Show and other content images”.

This was apparently an unfortunate wording choice. The change is an enhancement to give users a better experience with Media Servers that provide images with the content they present.

The Hulu channel within PlayOn was not removed.

Hulu was used as a source for TV Show images, meaning that when tubeCore needed to display an image that represents a TV Show it would request that image from hulu.com. tubeCore was modified to display the TV Show image from the Media Server (such as PlayOn).

Hulu is still available as a content channel within PlayOn.

As you may know Microsoft released Windows 8 recently. It is a new take on the Windows line of desktop operating systems designed to work better with smaller devices. Since the release of the OS I’ve gotten a few questions from people who use tubeCore asking if there are plans to support Windows 8.

The short answer is yes, but not right now. I will explain.

Windows 8, like Vista and Windows 7 before it, makes lots of changes to how Windows works both on the surface (like visual changes) and under the covers (like security). The surface changes do not affect tubeCore. This is because Windows Media Center for Windows 8 and Windows 7 are the same. It is the under-the-covers changes that matter.

Without boring you with boring details, the changes made to Windows 8 can cause tubeCore to function incorrectly. As with Windows Vista and Windows 7, to support Windows 8 could require that tubeCore be changed substantially. For instance, it took more than six weeks to make tubeCore work on Windows 7. Right now I cannot justify the resources for the change unless there is significant demand.

If there is demand for tubeCore to run on Windows 8, it will happen sooner rather than later.

I hope this answers any questions you have. If you have other questions or concerns please send me an email.

tubeCore 2.9 is a service update to 2.8 which fixes the Weather information. tubeCore 2.8 was shipped with support for the Google Weather API, which was shut down by Google. This release uses NDFD (National Digital Forecast Data) information from the NOAA. Please be aware that NDFD data is spurious and sometimes inconsistent. Therefore you may see ‘??’ for the High or Low temperature. This is hopefully a temporary glitch that the NDFD will have working properly soon. When it does tubeCore will automatically handle it.

tubeCore 2.8 is Released

tubeCore 2.8 is a major update to the #1 Internet DVR for Windows Media Center.

This announcement was originally made two weeks ago via email and the price was scheduled to increase last Friday. However, it was never posted on the tubeCentric website. I have moved the price change date to this Friday instead.

Economic reality has reared its head in a slow economy. The cost of doing business and developing software has increased over the past year and the competitive landscape have forced my hand. So, beginning midnight EST, Friday, September 28th, the price of tubeCore will change.

The new price is $14.99; up from $9.99. tubeCore will remain at the current price of $9.99 until September 28th.

All of you who fought to bring tubeCore and PlayOn together in order to save the best Internet DVR experience:

THANK YOU

Strong encouragement from the community caused The MediaMall and tubeCentric to come together and fix a rift between the two companies. That rift had resulted in tubeCore and PlayOn ceasing to work together anymore. Frustrated customers made their voices heard and now tubeCore and PlayOn work together again.

It’s all because of you. Except for your emails, tweets, forum posts, and blog comments this might not have happened. You guys are super awesome! Even a couple of my buddies (who are thinking of going into business for themselves) are encouraged by your fiery support.
